Explanation (説明)
In English, the general word for anime is animation. In Japanese, the word anime is used to describe any kind of animation, including TV programs such as Doraemon and movies such as The Lion King. Some of the many different terms used to describe this kind of art are listed below.
TV Shows
Animated TV shows may be called any of the following:
・ cartoon・ TV cartoon
・ animated TV series
・ animated TV program
Examples include Doraemon and The Simpsons. I'm sure a few of you out there remember some of the classics from the Sixties such as The Flintstones and The Jetsons.
Movies
There are quite a few names for animated movies. They include:
・ animated film
・ animated motion picture
・ animated feature
・ animated feature film
・ animated feature-length film
・ feature-length cartoon
・ full-length animated feature
Examples of animated films include 101 Dalmatians (the original, of course), Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bambi, and Mononoke Hime.
But . . .
The term anime, derived from the English word animation, is like the word "salaryman" in that it is a Japanese-English term that is moving into standard English.
People who like animation now refer to Japanese animation as anime. So, if you are talking about Japanese animation with someone who is familiar with it, it would be acceptable to call it anime. If you are talking about a Disney film, however, you should stick with the term animation.
