A Time class question of May 8, 1999 about bugs:
What are the twin bugs in A Bug's Life called? These creatures are called pill bugs.
The pill bug is commonly known as the "potato bug," though that is actually the name of a type of beetle that is not at all related to the pill bug. The pill bug and its relative the sow bug are actually crustaceans, so they're related to the crab and lobster (but I wouldn't want one in my sushi!).
The pill bug is also called aroly-poly, wood louse, or slater. Pill bugs are also called sow bugs, but the sow bug is a different (but related) creature. The pill bug and sow bug are the only land-dwelling crustaceans.
The pill bug is gray and is oblong, and can curl into a ball when it senses danger. It is usually found in moist, dark places, and is nocturnal.
The sow bug is a little bigger than the pill bug and looks similar, but it cannot roll into a ball. It is also called a wood louse or slater.
If you've seen the movie A Bug's Life, then you've seen some pill bugs--they're the twins who can't speak English. If you haven't seen this movie, see it--it's really funny! (The pill bugs in the movie, incidentally, are named "Tuck" and "Roll." Thanks very much to Mr. Walbridge of Oregon for letting me know!)
