The Hyphen, En Dash, and Em Dash

This is not a guide to usage; instead, it's just a short note on how to produce these on your computer.

Making them in MS Word on a Windows machine

Symbol	Appearance	How to Make It
hyphen		minus sign
en dash		Ctrl + minus sign
em dash		Ctrl + Alt + minus sign

Making them on a Macintosh

Symbol	Appearance	How to Make It
hyphen		minus sign
en dash		Option + minus sign
em dash		Option + Shift + minus sign

Note that the hyphen and the en dash are different, but most people (and many publications) use the hyphen where the en dash would normally be used.
