Phrasal Verbs

Separable Phrasal Verbs . . . . . . . . . 分離できる句動詞

There are three ways in which a separable phrasal verb is commonly used:

1. The noun is put in the middle of the phrasal verb:

Rie took her coat off when she entered the classroom.

2. The noun is put at the end of the phrasal verb:

Rie took off her coat when she entered the classroom.

3. The pronoun is put in the middle of the phrasal verb:

Rie wore a coat today, but she took it off when she entered the classroom.

The one form that is not considered natural is putting the pronoun at the end of a separable phrasal verb:

Rie wore a coat today, but she took off it when she entered the classroom.

Inseparable Phrasal Verbs . . . . . . . . . 分離できない句動詞

Some phrasal verbs do not take an object, so they do not need to be separated. The phrasal verb take off, for example, has a different meaning when it does not have an object.

My plane will take off at 10:00 tomorrow morning.
