dustbox/ダストボックス
Quick Glossary (用語辞典)dust = ほこり
receptacle = 容器
Explanation (説明)
The Japanese-English term dustbox seems to be a mixture of a translation of the Japanese word gomibako (which literally means "garbage box") and the British English term "dustbin."
In English there are many terms for the things that we throw trash in. Here are a few:
wastebasket (North American English)
This is a small receptacle for trash--it's the kind you often find in an office next to a desk.
garbage can (North American English)
This is a larger receptacle that is often kept outside the house, but this term is also used for receptacles that have a lid that are kept in the house.
trash can (North American English)
This is the same thing as a garbage can, but this term is used especially for those receptacles kept outside the house.
dustbin (British English)
This is also the same thing as a garbage can. Even though this word starts with "dust," we don't actually use the word "dust" when we are talking about regular garbage.
Note: The term dustbox is used for a receptacle attached to some machines and devices (such as electric saws or handheld vacuum cleaners) that collects dust during usage. It is not, however, used to mean garbage can.
