QuickGlossary (用語辞典)
phrasal verb = 句動詞
object = 目的語
Explanation (説明)
This is a basic phrasal verb, but it still seems to cause a lot of problems. Generally speaking, you turn on the thing to be used:
I turned on the lights / the radio / the TV / the copier . . .
It's not natural to say "turn on the switch," though do use other words such as "hit" and "flick" when we want to say "press the switch."
Sam, could you hit the light switch for me?
Examples(例文)The object is underlined.
Some people turn the TV on as soon as they get home. I feel sorry for them!
Please turn on the lights at 5:00 and turn them off at 8:00.Paul wanted to use the VCR, but the buttons were all labeled in Japanese so he couldn't figure out how to turn it on.
