Quick Glossary (用語辞典)

technology = 技術

dam = ダム

postpone = 延期する

Explanation (説明)& Examples(例文)

This idiom is often used in business--especially in meetings. It can be a bit tricky to use, however, as it has different meanings in British English and American English!

American English

The meaning is "to put aside or postpone."

Ms. Johnson: Why are we discussing the construction of the dam now? Isn't it a bit early? I think we need to get to work on the environmental impact study before we do anything else.

Mr. Adams: I agree. We should table our construction plans until we've gotten more information on the possible impact on the environment.

British English

The meaning is "to introduce a new topic" (especially in a meeting).

Mr. Pickwick: I think it is time to table Mr. Weller's plan for discussion--we need to talk about it and make a decision as soon as possible.

How can we avoid confusion?

If the context is not clear, you could use an idiom that means the same thing as the American English "table": shelve. It's easy to imagine "shelve" meaning "put away for later," isn't it?

Let's shelve this plan until we have more money in the budget for it.
