Exception: Even though bowling is a game, we normally don't use the verb play in front of bowl. (Note that we can use play by itself when talking about bowling.) We usually say go bowling or just the verb bowl by itself.

I went bowling last week. I didn't play* very well--I got 105!

Have you ever bowled with people you don't know? It makes me very nervous.
